Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I have been doing repairs 49 years, teaching 47 years and have had the store 42 years.
What is your primary product or service?
We teach all the woodwind and brass instruments, sell woodwind and brass instruments, frequently our own, quality, not expensive, brand, HEISIGtm. We repair instruments and Mr Heisig is a Master Mouthpiece Maker.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
My father was a professional musician and craftsman and inculcated me with the concept of quality, always quality.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Our students often do very well, including taking first in the state and going on to be professionals. Others have become teachers in all areas from elementary through college.
Our instruments are of high quality and often of very low price. We have been famous for providing vintage Selmer saxes and other fine instruments, For example, we introduced the following brands and models of trumpets to our area: Benge, Schilke, Calicchio, Claude Gordon (both Benge and Selmer), Besson (Besson-Kanstul), Boosey & Hawkes, Centurion and Heisig. Many top pros have used our mouthpieces, instruments or services.
Because of corporate changes and the deaths of older designers, many of them friends of Mr Heisig, and the general lack of understanding of what makes a good student or pro instrument, Mr. Heisig was approached to re-design the industry. We are well on the way with many mouthpiece designs, flutes, trumpets, an Eb clarinet, trombone, several designs for alto and tenor sax, and what we feel to be the finest soprano sax ever made. Many others will be forthcoming and Mr Heisig is currently designing a reed line.
We also train/re-train music teachers. Band directors in particular become quite excited about the information passed down to Mr Heisig by many of the great teachers, such as Prof Stephen Adelstein, Dr Claude Gordon, Alvin Cromwell, Joan Butterfield, Dr. Vernon Reid, Clement Hutchinson, Sigurd Rascher, Harvey Pittel, Ralph Morgan and many others.
We have a great deal to offer teachers and students in the understanding of accoustically and musically correct playing.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have only a store in Monterey at the present time. We did have stores in Saratoga, Santa Cruz and San Jose. We do have plans to make our HEISIGtm brand of instruments available worldwide.
We chose to move to Monterey because it is such a wonderful place to live/work, but also it is a great location for our world-wide clientele to visit us at.
